Newbe.

I'm new at this. I have a photo shop file that I'm trying to save as a
transparent GIF file?

Can you tell me how to save as a transparent GIF file please. I am using
photo shop version 8.0.

I can save it as a gift but the palate is limited to Web colours or Windows
system colours.
Neither have a palate with sufficient colours; I want millions of colours
not just to 256 in my transparent GIF.

Convert it to RBG first and save as a PSD. I tried converting a jpg to
gif and it went weird. I think gifs are ideal for solid color but
probably limited to 256 colors

what you are discribing is the nature of a giff. It has a fixed color
patate....no way around that. The only other way is to save it as a
png....as vovoid pointed out tho...this can increase file size...and there
are some older web browsers that wont support pngs....but these days you
should be ok with a png...just depends what your output is and who your
target audience is.

bottom line...you aint gonna get millions of colors with a gif. Think of
flat images....like a logo or other vector art. what what gifs are for

You can't.

A GIF file can never contain more than 256 colors. That is part of the
definition of what a "GIF" is. You can not make a GIF with millions of
colors *by definition.*

Sorry...

PNG with transparency is not supported and will not display correctly in
some popular Web browsers (*ahem* Internet Explorer *ahem*).

IE7, which supports PNG transparency, is now officially available:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/about/features/default.mspx

Hopefully transparent GIF's will join 256 color displays as a thing of the
past.

Considering the number of people still using older versions of IE, I
doubt that'll happen. (And it certainly took Microsoft long enough--to
be quite frank, why any human being in the world would actually use
Internet Explorer is quite beyond me, but that's a whole 'nother post
altogether!)

hi,
First I am newbie also with photoshop and one thing I learned for sure... photoshop really does a poor job in it's handling of making a transparent gif and and in the help very poor in discription on how to do it....

now I have photoshop cs and but it should be similar to photoshop 8 (that maybe the same thing..smile)

the way I do it, regardless if it a jpg or gif or tif etc....

1. open graphic file
a. sometimes need to make a duplicate background and use that for your editing ....
b. open a new file that transparent (has the checkboard pattern)
2. using a combination of masking off areas I don't want and using the the magic eraser ... delete what you don't want.. you should see a checkerboard pattern that will be the transparent part...
3. then do a save as and pick the format gif .....
a. in the next windows make sure transparent is check mark
b. sometime depending on what the original format.... you may have to change the pallett (local adaptive i generally use) and sometime changing the ditther.... weather i change these or not is when i look at the the picture... if the colors are right , if not, that when change those settings... and then save......

that the way i do it with photoshop... i haven't found anyting inphoto shop that shows a faster or reliable way of doing it.... that where my old photofinish was a lot better... smile... for transparent gif...!! all yo do there is just pick the color you want to be transparent...
