I also have PS CS installed on my PC. Perhaps, because *.psd files are set
to open with PS CS, that is the reason they won't open in PS CS2. I don't
want to uninstall PS CS yet - so how do I go into that app and deselect it
as the app to open *.psd files? Thanks........

Go to Start, settings, control panel, folder options, file types. Scroll
down to .psd and tell it to open with CS2, instead of CS.

That didn't work. What happens is, when I try to open a *.psd file created
in PS CS, the thumbnail of that file briefly appears - then I receive a
message that says: "Could not complete your request because the file could
not be found." Obviously, since the file showed in a thumbnail, it WAS
found. I'm thinking that, perhaps, PS CS is somehow interfering with
opening the file in PS CS2. I hate to uninstall PS CS if I don't have to.

Right click on the thumbnail, select Open With and see if PS CS2 is listed.
If it is, click on it. If not, select choose program, find CS2, select
always open with option and click it.

The thumbnail doesn't show itself until I try to use the Open command in PS
CS2. Then it only shows for 1/2 second - then I get the error message I
referred to. So I can't right click on it. Besides, I want to open ALL my
legacy *.psd files with either PS CS or PS CS2. Any other ideas?
Thanks......

I guess I don't understand what you are calling the thumbnail. Do you know
where the file is located on your hard drive? If so, have you tried opening
the file in Bridge and then open it in CS2?

With PS CS2 opened, I click on File>Open and navigate to the proper folder
where I have some of my legacy *.psd files stored. The title of that window
is Open. Placing the cursor on a psd filename (highlighting it) opens what
I am calling a thumbnail near the bottom of that window. If I click on that
filename, I get the message that says: Could not complete your request
because the file could not be found. Obviously, since I can briefly see the
file (what I'm calling a thumbnail), PS CS2 CAN find the file - it just
won't open it - or any other legacy *.psd file I have created. Yes, I can
open the files in Adobe Bridge. My gut tells me that the problem is that I
have two versions of PS installed - but I want to be absolutely sure before
I uninstall PS CS.

Just a thought. Do you have this file open in CS while trying to open it in
CS2?

I would doubt that the installation of both CS & CS2 would cause a conflict.
It's fairly common practice to keep an older ver on a machine, until one is
comfortable with the new installation, and that it works well. I had both,
plus v7 and v4 on the same box with no ill effects. Other than copying my
plug-ins to each ver (where they would work - plus same for some brushes,
actions, etc.) there was nothing different with the installations.

Have you attempted to Open the files from WinExplorer/My Computer? Personally,
I always use Windows Explorer out of habit, so don't know how it might differ
from My Computer, other than in the View setup initially. Navigate to the
folder with the file(s) in question. Right click on it/them, and go to
Properties. Check out what that dialog box says. Try double-clicking on one of
the files. Try Open With (CS2) on one of the files. In the Tools dropdown, you
should see a Tab for Files and you want to see what associations (programs)
are listed for that type of file. NOTE: Exact wording is probably different
than what I just wrote, as I'm going from memory and don't really look
carefully 'cause I just go to where I need to go - sorry.

One question that I don't recall seeing asked or answered: can you create a
PSD in CS2, Save, then re-Open it? Does that work?

Did you have any problems with the installation of CS2? Is it Activated/
Registered? If not, how long ago did you install it?

Good luck,
Hunt

I would say you're having a conflict with cs & cs2. I think I recall
having both installed and trying to have both programs open at the same
time but with different files. I wouldn't work. I uninstalled cs and now
use only cs2. You may want to try and do that. It may require a
reinstall of cs2 (not a repair as that fixes nothing).

But I don't have both versions opened at the same time.

I know that. I'm just relating the problems I had with both installed.

OK, tried that - but had the same result.
