Is there any good or pratical reason why the possibilities for the
manipulation of GIF-files are so hugely limited within Photoshop??

I understand the indexed color brings some limitations, but even the
most basic of transformations like rotate or mirror are unavailable
for a GIF-file. It's pretty annoying........

Umm. That's not true. Select All and Transform allows you to do those
things without changing color mode.

It's pretty annoying........

Photoshop lets you rotate an indexed color image without any limitation.
Yes, the result may be poor (unless you rotate +/- 90° or 180°), but
Photoshop certainly does not prevent you doing it anyway.
