I don't know if my question makes sense,
but can this be done? I am not talking about
the background of an image or the window
of an open image. I am talking about the
background of Photoshop 7 when you first
run the application. Please see the attached
image. Thank you!

your question doesnt make much sence...you dont really explain the problem
nor is there an attached image.

if you need to get rid of the pesky background layer....go to your layers
menu....double click on the background layer...and either rename the layer
yourself or opt for the defaul "layer 0". it will no longer be a background
layer and you are free to do what you want. (if it is a giff tho you will
have to go to image/mode/ and choose RGB rather than Indexed)

hope this helps

You cannot but consider yourself lucky you have a nice neutral background.
If you were on the Mac you'd have to work with your desktop and icons around
your work.

thank you guys! yes, i was talking about the application background.
sorry about the attachment for not going through. i don't know why
it didn't but oh well.

having a neutral background is both good and bad, i guess. i like it
on the mac because you get to see your desktop background (or icons),
and be able to switch, drag, and so on. however, i also like the pc
because i can't accidentally click on the desktop, and no longer be
working in photoshop. in addition, double clicking on the neutral
background brings up the "open" (or "open as" or "file browser" or
"new image", while holding alt or shift or control respectively)
dialog box. anyway, i'm clumsy so i always accidentally click on the
desktop on the mac. i just wish that you would be able to customize
the application background and put your own customized image, or have
a tranparency option so you would be able to see your desktop (for the
pc). well, that's my wishful thinking.

once again, thank you for the help!

You are totally right, it is in Control Panel> Display> Appearance> Item:
Application Background.
