PS7

I did some browsing yesterday for some textures. Found some sets.
Many of these sets are TIF & JPG. For Example - Filter: Texturizer,
isn't allowing
the use of the TIF & JPG textures, (example: TIF of wood in color).
What is the purpose if these TIF & JPG textures that I'm missing?
(Only allowed to choose grayscale PSD files in Texturizer Filter)

Is there a simpler way of making a tiled wood background than...
Opening a color TIF or JPG. Selecting with selection tool, then
"Define Pattern", then going to Fill Dialogue Box and choosing the
newly created "Defined Pattern"?

I'd like to have a way to just have my texture files (JPG & TIF)
in a necessary file folder within PS. Then being able to use them, tile them
and scale them from one of the filters or plugins... Is this possible
and am I missing something..

They are probably intended as texture maps for 3D rendering programs.
