If you're OCRing black-and-white text, change the colorspace from
Grayscale to Bitmap before saving as a tiff. That should bring the
filesize of a single letter-size document at 300dpi to well under a MB.
Photoshop's batch processing should be able to handle this, if you write
a generic action that changes the colorspace to bitmap.
