It is, but the connections can be curved as well as straight.

One key to using the Pen tool successfully is to have your right hand on
the mouse and your left hand on the bottom left corner of the keyboard,
because the Pen tool does different things when you hold down the
Control key, the Alt key, the Shift key, and different things when you
hold down combinations of those keys.

There are three kinds of Pen points. If you just click the mouse, you
get a connector point. It is used to draw straight segments between
points.

If you click, hold down the mouse button, and drag, you get a Smooth
point. This is used to connect curved parts of a path. A perfect circle
can be made with only four smooth points.

If you click, hold down the mouse button, and drag, then hold down the
ALT key (PC) or OPTION key (Mac), the cursor changes to a caret. If you
click the caret on one of the handles and drag the mouse, you will break
the handles apart so that they can be adjusted independently. This is
how you create a Corner point--a place where two curved lines meet at a
corner.

You can remove the last point on a curve by hitting Undo.

You can move, or remove, any point on a curve by holding down CONTROL
(PC) or COMMAND (Mac), clicking the point, and then either dragging to
move it or pressing Delete ont he keyboard to delete it. This breaks the
path.

You can remove a point without breaking the path by using the Remove
Point tool (the one that looks like a pen with a minus sign next to it)
from the Pen tool flyout.

There's a very good Quicktime video tutorial
by Eddie Tapp at this site:
http://www.photoworkshop.com/adobe/software_cinema

It's an Adobe Flash based menu, so you need to have that installed.
Because it's Flash based, I can't give you a direct link, so...

To see the video, you need to do the following:
1. Go to the above web page
2. Click on the yellow "Adobe Photoshop CS, CS2, and CS3" link
3. Click on the "Jack Davis" link
(the menu's messed up - it will take you to the Eddie Tapp
tutorials)
4. In the right column, click on the Pro Techniques II - Pen Tool
link.
5. It will open in a pop-up window

The site's worth bookmarking -
there are some good sample tutorials there.

Also, on Google books, there's an Eddie Tapp book.
Here's a link to the Pen Tool chapter:

It is much easier to suggest solutions when you know nothing
about the problem.
