It is, but the connections can be curved as well as straight.
One key to using the Pen tool successfully is to have your right hand on
the mouse and your left hand on the bottom left corner of the keyboard,
because the Pen tool does different things when you hold down the
Control key, the Alt key, the Shift key, and different things when you
hold down combinations of those keys.
There are three kinds of Pen points. If you just click the mouse, you
get a connector point. It is used to draw straight segments between
points.
If you click, hold down the mouse button, and drag, you get a Smooth
point. This is used to connect curved parts of a path. A perfect circle
can be made with only four smooth points.
If you click, hold down the mouse button, and drag, then hold down the
ALT key (PC) or OPTION key (Mac), the cursor changes to a caret. If you
click the caret on one of the handles and drag the mouse, you will break
the handles apart so that they can be adjusted independently. This is
how you create a Corner point--a place where two curved lines meet at a
corner.
