I'd wager it's a lossless JPEG, which is a special case and will likely
require a plug-in.

I am thinking that it a jpeg2000 format since that has lossless and transparent ability...... it a fairly new jpeg format a great improvement over the regular jpeg (jpg).... if your trying to open it up in photoshop youwill need a filter/plugin for it.....
