I have some bad generated eps figures. They have unnecessary empty
areas.
I would like to cut out such areas. In other words I would like to
frame my figures.

You can open EPS in Photoshop and use the CROP feature.

Or if you are real good, you can edit the EPS directly with a text editor.

I think the OP was implying he doesn't have Photoshop, but had succeeded in
finding a newsgroup where people seem to know about such things.

A text editor may suffice:

or maybe the CropBox parameter:
