I am a total newbie when it comes to digital capture. So, here is a
possibly dumb question.

I've just taken a shot in RAW mode with a Canon G9; it produces a CR2
type file. Photoshop/CS2 doesn't recognize the file type, either
directly or through Bridge. To get it into PS, I have to convert the
file to tif first. Is there a way around this (slow) process?

Comments appreciated.

Do you have the latest version of ACR?

A workaround would be Adobe DNG converter.

Both available from Adobe.

You probably need to update the list of raw formats supported because your
G9 (which is quite a new model) isn't in the current list in CS2. Go to the
Adobe website and have a look under "Support" or "Updates" and you should
find a new plug-in. Someone else who's more familiar with the program
should be better able to tell you where to find it and how to install it.

Unfortunately, that won't work. Camera RAW for CS2 is no longer updated,
so there won't be support for G9 CR2 files now or in the future. You can
convert the CR2 files to DNG using the free Adobe DNG Converter, or you
can convert CR2 to TIFF in the Canon software that came with the camera.

Thanks for the quick education Rudy, Steve and Johan. I would have gone
to the Adobe site first if I knew what I was looking for.

Yes, unfortunately, specific Camera RAW support for the G9 requires CS3,
and Adobe DNG Converter doesn't recognize the CR2 file type either.
Guess I'll have to go the tif route until I get CS3. (That action first
requires resolution of some printing issues with QTR and Piezo inks.)

Harry, download the Adobe DNG converter and convert your G9 raw files to
DNG, which CS2 can use. I've been doing this for about a year - ever since
support for ACR for CS2 was discontinued.

Thanks, Bob, I tried that, but it doesn't work. According to Adobe,
only the CS3 upgrade will recognize the G9 files. So, I decided to bite
the bullet and upgrade to CS3, something I would have done eventually,
anyway.
